OUCH. raising children is a painful process, not just a joyful one. it is remarkable how deeply their words can wound, and what your daughter said was unkind. that's not okay. it's important to give bc you want to give and not so as to receive appreciation and yet... it is reasonable to expect kind treatment and some kind of acknowledgment of your efforts. i also think it's fair and reasonable to mention to your daughter how her words affected you, that they were unkind, and that you wish she could be a little more appreciative of your efforts. just a thought...
sending strength and kindness for you,

Hi Nancy,
I am mother of two daughters. I stumbled upon your article today as I was looking for a solution for not being appreciated. Today my older one said “I am not going to listen to you, you don’t even have a job”. It hit me so hard, that I waited for the kids to go to school and started crying. I do everything for these kids, I guess I shouldn’t do this much. Do kids appreciate moms more when they work outside of the home? Is the worth of person measured by what they earn. I left the job because I thought I am lucky enough to be able to stay home and take care of the kids. I guess not!

Hi Alex,
Absolutely, dads feels invisible too. It's the same feeling, regardless of gender. Raising kids without a spouse to have adult conversations with is incredibly difficult. I am wondering if there are other single dads you know or might find, that could provide conversation and a support system for you; we need that when we're doing the heavy lifting of child rearing! Know too that the old shoes will feel new again at some point. This too shall pass...this too shall pass.
Warmest,
Nancy
